The site of the Central Market, between the Medina and the current city center, is one of the oldest markets in Tangier. It was built at the end of the 19th century outside the walls of the medina.
The Central Market or «Grand Socco» is representative of contemporary architectural heritage in Tanger, which gives it a very special value.
This space more than a century is one of the few and most beautiful examples of iron architecture in the city that retains its original metal frame, dating from the early twentieth century.
Current state of construction:
The current state of the market, and the various non-integrated developments that have been made over the years, the aging and deterioration of the building have given rise to a defective situation of the building. This has implications for the use of space, its safety and the stability of the structure.
The project will aim to reconstruct, restore and rehabilitate this market while preserving the historic heritage and “aura” of the site. Our thinking goes beyond simple “renovation” but focuses on an approach that is at the same time architectural, heritage and sustainable:
« The project consists of redefining the use of existing buildings and bringing them to the latest standards by adding value ».
The objective of the work is twofold :
- Demolition of areas of the current building that are in danger of collapse and cannot be restored,
- Rebuild the demolished areas to their original condition, taking into account the restoration of the building to standards and the needs of operators.
The main steps of this re-architecture project are:
- Open the market on the wall
- Creation of additional commercial areas of 350 sqm in R+1
- Creation of a logistics zone
